Sales at India's riot-hit Maruti slide in August

AFP - India's largest passenger carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported Saturday a more than 40 percent slide in sales last month from a year earlier, as output at a key plant shaken by deadly violence tumbled.

The fall in Maruti's sales came as other Indian automakers said sales rose in August year-on-year, mainly due to robust consumer demand for diesel models whose fuel is heavily subsidised by the government.

Maruti said sales dropped by 41 percent to 54,154 vehicles following a nearly month-long lockout imposed after workers attacked managers at a plant in northern India, killing one and injuring close to 100 others.

Due to the lockout sales of some of Maruti's top-selling models such as the hatchback Swift and A-star models "were impacted," the company said in a statement.

Maruti is key to the fortunes of Suzuki Motor Corp, Maruti's Japanese parent, contributing around one-third of its pre-tax profit.

Maruti fired some 500 workers who it alleged were involved in the July riot but is hopeful of getting its Manesar plant back to full capacity soon.

The company has been producing only around 150 cars a day at the plant which normally supplies 550,000 cars a year -- 40 percent of Maruti's output.

It has said it hopes to restore full production "in a reasonably short period of time" but has given no date.

India's car sales are expected to grow nine-to-11 percent this year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

While Western carmakers would envy the Indian car sector's projected sales, they are disappointing for India where at least 20 percent annual growth has been the norm.

High interest costs and expensive fuel have kept buyers away from showrooms, analysts say.

Tata Motors, India's biggest commercial vehicle maker by sales, reported a 12 percent jump in sales to 71,826 vehicles while sales of passenger vehicles climbed 33 percent to 22,311 units.

Ford's Indian arm said sales rose 16 percent to 10,352 vehicles while Toyota Motor Corp said its sales grew 20 percent to 13,995 units.

However, sales of Hyundai's India unit, the country's second-largest car manufacturer, dropped eight percent to 46,886 as exports slumped.

11-year-old Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is a boy with a problem. He sees ghosts. In a town like Blithe Hollow that was the location of a famous witch hunt over 300 years ago, there are a lot of spirits hanging around.

It?s no wonder Norman is a bit melancholy and prefers to spend time alone. When his superficial older sister Courtney (Anna Kendrick
Anna Kendrick) isn?t giving him a hard time, school bully Alvin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) does his best to humiliate Norman.

When his oddball uncle Prenderghast (John Goodman) tells Norman he has to help him protect their little town from a real witch?s curse that?s about to unleash a septet of zombies, Norman panics. He wants nothing to do with any more dead or undead people. But when Prenderghast crosses over unexpectedly, the job falls on Norman.

The real fun of ParaNorman is the quirky, hilarious details that make for an animated movie experience like no other. In one scene, Norman plays with his best friend?s dead puppy?s ghost who sniffs around in two pieces, presumably because he was hit by a car. Instead of being gruesome however, the filmmakers get a lot of humor out of being dead.

ParaNorman is the kind of pleasant summer surprise that makes up for suffering through a season packed with explosions. From Laika, a production company based in Portland, comes a small town story that doesn?t talk down to its audience, but nudges them knowingly. Norman, named in the film?s title, is a young horror movie buff cursed by his ability to see dead people.

Green and ghoulish, the ghosts of those who won?t move on clutter up his day, making his walk to school an obstacle course invisible to others. His ability has also made Norman ? with his brown, Bart Simpson hair ? an outcast at school, so at every available opportunity, he escapes into B-movie madness.

Of course, there?s evil afoot, bubbling under the pleasantly rustic town of Blithe Hollow. The tiny tourist trap is a site famed for having once hanged a witch. As the resident Ghost Whisperer, Norman learns that witch is on her way back. Only he can stop her and end the zombie plague she brings along with her.

What?s refreshing about ParaNorman is how the script takes so little for granted. Easily recognizable archetypes ? the bully, the jock, the airhead ? constantly surprise. In particular, Norman?s chubby friend Neil steals many a moment. He?s a plucky little motor mouth who refuses to play the victim.

New car standards good for air, reduced oil dependence

The Obama Administration this week finalized new fuel efficiency standards leading to cars and light duty trucks that achieve 54.4 miles per gallon by 2025.

There is much to like about the fuel efficiency standards, which have the support of the 13 major automakers responsible for 90 percent of the vehicles sold in the United States.

Energy efficient vehicles move this country away from dependence on foreign oil. The fuel efficiency programs already in place and improving over the next decade will reduce oil consumption by more than 2 million barrels a day by 2025. That?s the equivalent of about half of the oil we import from OPEC each day.

It?s abundantly clear that oil is a finite resource, but a resource the global economy still leans on heavily. Anything the government and auto industry can do to significantly reduce consumption helps to stretch those supplies out while innovators work on new technologies to transition from the fossil fuel economy.

The fuel efficiency standards also represent one of the few success stories in the bid to reduce carbon pollution that contributes to climate change. The standards should cut emissions from cars and small trucks by 50 percent by 2025. It represents a carbon dioxide emission reduction of 6 billion metric tons over the life of the program. Put another way, the CO2 reductions are more than all of the carbon dioxide emitted by the United States in 2010.

With gas prices once again above the $4 per gallon mark this summer, consumers know just how big of bite fuel for vehicles takes out of a household budget. Federal officials estimate that a family buying a 2025 model car will see a fuel savings of about $8,000 over the life of the vehicle. That?s comparable to lowering the price of gas by about $1.

Consumers are already gravitating to energy efficient vehicles entering the market place. There are gas-powered cars on the market achieving 40 mpg on the freeway without compromising comfort, safety and acceleration. There?s ample reason to believe that the auto industry can and will take advantage of a variety of new technologies as it transitions to the cars of the future.

Some of the technologies already available include: advanced gasoline engines and transmissions, vehicle weight reductions, lower tire rolling resistance, improved aerodynamics and improvements in air conditioning systems.

The federal fuel efficiency program also provides incentives for electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and vehicles that utilize fuel cells.

The fuel efficiency standards provide an opportunity for America to lead the way to a new transportation future that other nations can and should emulate.
