For the first time, scientists at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute have shown that an experimental bariatric surgery can lower blood sugar levels in rats with type 1 diabetes.

A team led by Dr. Tony Lam and Dr. Danna Breen, a post- doctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Lam, used a rat model to study novel nutrient-sensing signals in the jejunum, located in the middle of the intestine. Dr. Lam and his team demonstrate that duodenal-jejunal bypass surgery activates novel nutrient-sensing signals in the jejunum and rapidly lowers blood sugar levels in non-obese rats with uncontrolled diabetes. DJB surgery is a type of bariatric surgery which excludes the duodenum and proximal jejunum, the first section of the small intestine, and instead redirects food into the distal jejunum, the middle to last section of the intestine. This latter section of the intestine, as demonstrated by Dr. Lam and his team, can sense glucose and signal to the brain to let the liver know that it must lower glucose production, leading to better control of blood sugar in the diabetic rats.

The study showed for the first time that a surgical intervention induces a rapid glucose-lowering effect in non-obese type 1 uncontrolled diabetic rats, independent of a reduction in food intake and body weight as well as changes in blood insulin levels.

The research was published in a paper entitled, "Jejunal nutrient sensing is required for duodenal-proximal jejunal bypass surgery to lower glucose levels in uncontrolled diabetes," in the May 20, 2012 on-line edition of the international journal Nature Medicine.

"We report that shortly after a meal, the influx of nutrients into the jejunum of DJB surgical diabetic rats activates novel sensing mechanisms to lower blood sugar levels. Importantly, this occurs in the presence of insulin-deficiency and is independent of weight loss," says Dr. Lam, who holds The John Kitson McIvor (1915 1942) Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research and the Canada Research Chair in Obesity at the Toronto General Research Institute and the University of Toronto. He is also Associate Director of Research at the Banting and Best Diabetes Centre at the University of Toronto.

Currently, patients with Type 1 diabetes lower their glucose through insulin injections (usually several times a day) and must regularly monitor blood glucose levels. High or uncontrolled glucose levels can result in damage to eyes, nerves and kidneys and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, erectile dysfunction, foot problems and amputations. Many laboratories around the world are in a race to find alternative and effective ways in which to lower and better control glucose levels because of the severe complications which can result from high sugar levels.

Dr. Lam's laboratory is a world pioneer in exploring the role of the gut in regulating blood sugar. "The gut is an easier and therefore more promising therapeutic target in regulating blood sugar than the brain or liver, due to their potential side effects, " says Dr. Danna Breen, who is the lead author in the study. Dr. Breen adds that this type of surgery may potentially have therapeutic value in lowering glucose (sugar) levels in non-obese individuals with type 2 or 1 diabetes, but that many more years of future studies are required to determine whether this approach is effective and safe in humans who have diabetes.

In healthy individuals, insulin is a hormone whose primary role is to regulate blood sugar. It is produced by cells located on the pancreas in response to sugar intake, and it acts to bring blood sugar to appropriate levels, allowing the body to have the energy it needs to function properly. In persons with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels due to lack of insulin which cannot signal to the liver to reduce sugar production. People with type 1 diabetes need to take daily insulin shots and carefully monitor their blood sugar levels.

"If new medicines or surgical interventions can be developed that stimulate this sensing mechanism in the gut, we may have an effective and alternative way of slowing down the body's production of sugar, thereby lowering blood sugar levels in diabetes," says Dr. Lam, who is also an Associate Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto. Other ongoing studies of Dr. Lam's lab reveal novel molecular targets in the gut that effectively lower blood sugar in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Studies reported in the New England Journal of Medicine this year have challenged medical therapy as the prevailing method of treating patients with type 2 diabetes. Two studies reported that bariatric surgery induced remission in severely obese patients with type 2 diabetes, and was associated with significant improvement in metabolic control over and above medical therapy, both conventional and intensive. An accompanying April 26, 2012 editorial by Drs. Zimmet and Alberti, states that "surgeons may now be able to claim greater success in achieving metabolic control", in these patients, although long-term studies with greater numbers of patients still need to be completed. No studies have yet reported on surgical interventions as treatments for patients with type 1 diabetes.

"More than two million Canadians have diabetes. Diabetes is an epidemic in Canada and around the world that is growing at an alarming rate," says Dr. Philip M. Sherman, Scientific Director of the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. "Since many people are undergoing bariatric surgery in an attempt to manage morbid obesity and the associated health problems, such as diabetes, it is critical that we understand how it works. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is pleased to support Dr. Lam's work which increases our understanding and may offer a new approach to managing morbidity and premature mortality resulting from this illness."

Working with rats, Drs. Lam, Breen and colleagues designed and performed a series of elegant experiments on two different groups of rats: rats whose insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells were destroyed by toxins; and genetically-altered rats which experienced spontaneous autoimmune destruction of islet cells similar to what happens in humans with type 1 diabetes.

Non-obese rats induced with uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune type 1 diabetes had an experimental DJB surgery, a variation of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the most common surgical method currently used to treat obese patients. Two days after DJB surgery, blood sugars were normal in the insulin-deficient diabetic rats.

Dr. Breen emphasized that further studies need to be undertaken to determine the long-term effects of this intervention in rodents, as well as to ensure the safety and efficacy of this procedure in humans.

No Way to Treat a Lady: The Violence is Over the Top in the TAS ...

StreetcarNamedDesirePHOTOcropped TAS201211 No Way to Treat a Lady: The Violence is Over the Top in the TAS Production of A Streetcar Named Desire

Triangle actors Jason Sharp and Betsy Henderson star as Stanley and Blanche in "A Streetcar Named Desire" at the Boykin Center in Wilson (photo by Keith Barnes)

?

Under the bold but misguided direction of University of Miami (Florida) law professor Marc A. Fajer, the Theater of the American South?s Summer 2012 production of A Streetcar Named Desire downplays the poetry and accentuates the violence in Mississippi playwright and poet Thomas Lanier ?Tennessee? Williams?1948 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, and takes the violence over the top.

Ex-U.S. Army veteran Stanley Kowalski (played by Raleigh actor Jason Daniel Sharp) is trapped in a un-air-conditioned two-room apartment in the French Quarter of New Orleans, circa 1947. He shares those cramped quarters ? claustrophobically recreated by technical director and scenic designer Chris Bernier ? with his mousy wife, Stella (Clemmons, NC native Lilly Nelson), and his condescending sister-in-law, fading Southern belle Blanche DuBois (Raleigh actress Betsy Thompson Henderson), who still clings to her aristocratic pretensions despite having lost the family?s ancestral home ? Belle Reve in Laurel, MS ? to creditors and being fired from her job as a high school English teacher for having an affair with one of her students.

Tennessee Williams meant for Stanley be a crude, lower-class, but upward-aspiring American ethnic of Polish descent and for his and Stella?s apartment to be a pressure cooker, but I seriously doubt if he meant for Stanley to explode into physical violence ? smashing crockery, manhandling Stella, throttling and eventually raping Blanche ? as often as he does in the current Theater of the American South presentation of A Streetcar Named Desire. Indeed, the violence that Hurricane Stanley inflicts on his sister-in-law and wife and their meager possessions necessitates lengthy scene changes that dissipate dramatic tension.

Betsy Henderson and Jason Sharp are the Beauty and the Beast of this Streetcar, but Theater of the American South?s visceral retelling of Williams? Southern Gothic drama is no fairy tale, and Stanley never stops bellowing and smashing things. Meanwhile, Betsy Henderson plays Blanche with conviction in frizzy platinum-blonde wigs that give Miss DuBois the look of a Flapper of the 1920s, not a shabby-genteel refugee ? in 1947 ? from a nightmarish past that includes an unfortunate early marriage to a callow youth who killed himself rather than admit his homosexuality, a seemingly never-ending succession of family financial setbacks and fatal illnesses, and increasing alcoholism and promiscuity.

Blanche still thinks of herself as some sort of social butterfly ? and Stanley is obsessed with exposing her shameful secrets and pulling off her wings, one by one. First, he wrecks her budding romantic relationship with his old Army buddy Harold Mitchell (Raleigh actor Jason Peck) by wising up mama?s-boy ?Mitch? to some of Blanche?s seamiest indiscretions. Then, when Stella enters the hospital to give birth to their child, Stanley takes advantage of her absence from the apartment to rape Blanche (although ? just before the blackout ? director Marc Fajer has Blanche inexplicably reach up to draw her rapist nearer). But the final indignity comes post-partum when Stanley ? with Stella?s acquiescence ? contrives to have Blanche involuntarily committed to a shabby state mental institution.

As the gentlemanly Doctor and burly no-nonsense Nurse (vividly sketched by Doug Nydick and Page Purgar) are leading her away, Blanche glares at Stanley and Stella and snarls defiantly, ?I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.? That?s hardly the benediction of a poor lost soul finally broken by circumstances ? and rude, crude Stanley ? and not the way that any audience should remember A Streetcar Named Desire.

Swift Somethings: Top Tips for Business Accounting

Accounts are probably the most tedious and boring part of having a small business. Nothing makes me want to grab my sketchbook and run away like facing a mountain of receipts and invoices that need filing and analysing.

However, from day one I have forced myself to take this side of things seriously. Proper accounts mean I have a proper business. Which means I am not just someone who sits and draws cats for fun, I am a professional illustrator - albeit not full time at the moment - but when that day comes my paperwork and I will be organised and ready for it!

Now, I realise for us creative types this is not the easiest of tasks to tackle. And so, I did the sensible thing and bagged myself a boyfriend who is a qualified accountant. I thought I would share his wisdom with you all and so here are some top tips from my very own accounts fiend.

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS FUNDS IN A SEPARATE BANK ACCOUNT
You don't want to have to search through lots of personal payments/receipts to find whether a? customer has paid you.

KEEP A RECORD OF EVERY TRANSACTION YOUR BUSINESS UNDERTAKES

File these in an organised fashion so they are easy to relocate. Apply unique references to your sales invoices to allow you to track their payment and include wording on them regarding the terms of payment e.g "payment in full within 30 days of the invoice date".

OPEN TRADE ACCOUNTS WITH SUPPLIERS IF POSSIBLE

You'll get better prices and/or better bulk discounts. There are lots of suppliers out there. Don't restrict yourself to a certain area. Most suppliers can deliver nationally via post or courier. Always ask for samples before placing an order.

DEVISE A STRUCTURED SALES PRICE

To do this work out how much you can buy your materials for (remember the more you buy the cheaper the materials becomes individually) and then see what products similar to yours are selling for on the open market. Remember it's always easier to generate more profit by reducing your materials cost than increasing your products sales price.

SELL TO STOCKITS ON AN INVOICE BASIS RATHER THAN A SALE OR RETURN BASIS IF POSSIBLE

Remember to pick your stockists carefully (they will be representing you and your work as far as the public are concerned) and always ask them what their margin or mark-up is as this will determine the price they pay you and the profit you make.

Hope these help!?

Let me know if there are any accounting questions you need answered and I will try and do a Q&A post - More accounting bits and bobs to come soon.

Hope for Commercial Real Estate | Commercial Property Management

Posted on May 16, 2012

As the deepest U.S. recession since the Great Depression grinds on, there are some hopeful signs for a turn around in the much diminished commercial real estate arena.

One factor helping to drive commercial building starts is the aging of America. As the Baby Boomer generation pushes the age demographic ever upward, more senior housing and nursing care facilities are needed. The result is an increase in construction starts for these two areas over last year, according to the Seniors Housing Construction Trends Report 2011.

According to David Schless, president of the American Seniors Housing Association (ASHA), it is an important but modest amount of new construction. "Until the capital markets change and the economy improves, we expect to see relatively muted levels of construction of market-rate seniors housing."

Senior apartments are responsible for 49 percent of the new units currently under way, of which, only 8 percent fall under the category of market-rate properties. Another 20 percent of the new projects are independent living properties, with assisted living properties accounting for 16 percent and nursing care buildings 15 percent.

Another area of recent activity is commercial building investments in secondary markets across the country. This trend may be led by spiking valuations for office properties in a number of gateway cities.

Canadian firms recently purchased nearly a half million square feet office building space in Bethesda, Maryland and Overland Park, Kansas. In Minnesota, Hempel Properties bought a 393,902 square foot property in Minneapolis, close to their home base in Maple Grove.

In California DIRECTV Inc. recently made the largest leasing deal in years by expanding its corporate headquarters into roughly 630,000 square feet of office space at Kilroy Airport Center, in El Segundo.

Office sales transactions in Columbia, S.C., Asheville, N.C. and Detroit over the last month also added to significant commercial real estate activity in secondary city markets. In Pittsburgh, Highwoods Properties bought the 1.54 million square foot complex of office buildings known as PPG Place.

Investor desires for better returns is likely what's driving large commercial purchases in second tier cities across the country. Properties in the largest markets, such as New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. may be burdened with fewer risks; however cap rates in those markets are nearing pre-recession levels.

"There are cities at the top end of the market where the pricing is very robust, but the gains [in valuation] have been more limited in places like Houston," notes Sam Chandan, president and chief economist with Chandan Economics. "These are markets where individual core assets will trade at high valuation, but it's still not comparable to D.C., New York or San Francisco."

The Art of Franchising

I always have a good option especially when it is related to franchising. This is how things should turn out to be just fine with franchising. I really know that it is always an advantage to feel good with the idea that the business in franchising is actually advancing. This is indeed a great thing to tackle into. One must make things really effective especially when we are going to think more of the possibilities that are related to franchising. In franchising, all business personnel can? possibly earn out from it. In fact, there is no need for them to think of the strategies to have the business work because it is already working.

How Eliminating Your Debt Can Change Your Life

It is estimated that over 100,000 Canadians file a consumer proposal or file for bankruptcy annually. Hundreds of thousands of other Canadians are struggling with their own high account balances on loans and credit card accounts. These high account balances are often coupled with high monthly payments, a tight budget and a low level of personal savings. The combination of these factors can create a financial nightmare for individuals. A single financial event, such as the loss of a job or a serious illness, can cause them to lose control of the delicate balance of their finances. The stress of this situation can be extreme, and this stress can lead to insomnia, fatigue, digestive issues, depression and more. Further, this heavy debt burden can prevent you and your family from truly enjoying life as well as from planning and saving for the future.

What is the Best Credit Card?

Apply for a credit card with no credit history or a low credit score and there is a good chance that the bank will deny your request. This is almost always the outcome if you apply for an unsecured credit card. But if you need credit to improve your credit score, a secured credit card is the best credit card. You don?t need good credit for these cards. In fact, you don?t need a credit score or history. You can apply with your bank, and once you pay the deposit and the annual fee, you can obtain a credit card in your own name.

How to Eliminate A Credit Card Debt

When consumers get tired of dealing with their original creditor or bank, they often turn to the services of debt consolidation firms. These consolidation firms can provide options that can appear quite appealing to consumers after dealing with multiple monthly payments at high interest rates. The consolidators will lump all monthly payments into one and usually charge a lower interest rate. This may sound great but at the end of the day the consumer is still making monthly payments for years.

Three Bad Credit Repair Moves

That?s a big ?no.? Drowning in credit card debt is much different than say, taking on a federally-backed student loan. The nature of debt affects its volatility and effect on your credit score. Rather than paying down debts indiscriminately, take a look at the bigger picture and ask some probing questions. What kind of debt is it? Revolving, installment, etc.? How much are you paying in interest? How would reducing the balance affect your credit score? For example, while paying off credit card debt would reduce your credit utilization ratio and provide a jolt in your credit score, making extra payments on your 30-year fixed mortgage is another story. Do your homework to determine which debt has the most immediate effect on your credit and set your sights on those first.

Nebraska GOP chooses Senate challenger for Kerrey

By PHILIP ELLIOTT
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - An insurgent Republican lawmaker in Nebraska will square off against former Sen. Bob Kerrey this fall in the state's U.S. Senate race, as Democrats look to hold onto the Senate seat and control of one part of Capitol Hill.

In Tuesday's Republican primary, state Sen. Deb Fischer rode a wave of discontent with the GOP establishment to best Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, the preferred candidate of Washington, D.C.-based Republicans, and Treasurer Don Stenberg in a race that drew national attention from outside groups in its final, unpredictable weeks.

The outcome underscored years-old divisions within the GOP, and set the stage for a competitive general election race that could determine the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

Fischer's victory marked also another win for the party's anti-establishment movement just a week after a tea party-supported Richard Mourdock beat Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar in that state's GOP primary.

Elsewhere Tuesday, presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney inched closer to his all-but-certain nomination with wins in two more states.

Romney was expected to pick up most - if not all - of Oregon's 25 delegates. Nebraska Republicans also picked Romney although no delegates would be allotted in a vote that amounts to a beauty contest. The state's 32 delegates to the Republican National Convention later this year will be determined at the state convention on July 14.

Romney began the day 171 delegates short of the 1,144 needed for the nomination and was on pace to get them before the month ended. He spent his day in Iowa, a competitive general election battleground, criticizing President Barack Obama on voters' top concern, the economy.

"This is not solely a Democrat or a Republican problem," Romney said in Des Moines in a clear pitch to independent voters who will decide the election. "The issue isn't who deserves the most blame, it's who is going to do what it takes to put out the fire."

Idaho voters also picked nominees for state and congressional offices.

But the biggest race Tuesday was Nebraska's GOP Senate primary.

Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson, a two-term moderate, is retiring and both parties are eyeing his seat. Democrats want to keep it to maintain their Senate majority, while Republicans see an opportunity in their drive to win back control of the Senate.

Democrats control the Senate 51-47, plus two independents who caucus with the majority. But the outcome in November of several competitive Senate races could result in a power shift.

Kerrey, who served Nebraska as governor and as a U.S. senator before leaving Congress in 2001 to become a university president in New York, reluctantly agreed to run again to help give Democrats a shot at holding a seat they've long controlled.

A decorated veteran and former Navy SEAL, Kerrey faced questions about his residency and Republicans filed a legal challenge. The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled it had no jurisdiction to consider the challenge, clearing the way for Kerrey to run for Senate.

Republicans in Washington turned to Bruning, who has been successful in statewide races and had raised $3.5 million through the end of April.

But in the final stretch of the Senate campaign, he found his nomination hardly assured.

Fischer, a rancher from rural Nebraska, mounted a feisty campaign that attracted attention and endorsements from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, failed presidential contender Herman Cain and other tea party darlings.

She's also backed by an outside group, created by TD Ameritrade founder Joe Ricketts, that ran TV ads on her behalf.

Stenberg, for his part, has argued that he is the only "genuine, life-long conservative" in the race. He won the backing of Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina but failed during his fourth run for Senate since 1996.

Teenager ejected in Old Beatty Ford head-on collision

ROCKWELL ? A Rockwell teenager was ejected from a Jeep on Old Beatty Ford Road when it crossed the center line and collided with a car Tuesday afternoon.

Kevin Lambert, of Burchette Drive, remained in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast Tuesday night. Robert Chewy, driver of the oncoming Nissan Altima, was in emergency surgery.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Anthony Carpenter said Lambert, 18, and his girlfriend, Josie Miller, 17, were traveling west on Old Beatty Ford Road shortly after 5 p.m. when Lambert?s Jeep crossed the center line.

Carpenter said Lambert was not wearing a seat belt.

Neighbors said they saw Miller crawl out of the back of the Jeep, which was overturned in the front yard at 13020 Old Beatty Ford Road. Lambert was laying next to the Jeep.

Beside a fence on the opposite side of Old Beatty Ford, the Altima was mangled.

Witnesses said two men saw smoke coming from the engine and pulled Chewy out, but the car never caught fire.

All three were taken to NorthEast by ambulance. Authorities said Miller was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Lambert?s aunt, Abbie Crain, said she was at home when she got the call about the wreck.

Once at the scene, she said, Lambert was conscious. Authorities later said it was one of the few times he was.

?He knew who we were,? she said. ?He just didn?t want anybody touching him. He was so hurt.?

Lambert and Miller have been dating about a year, Crain said.

Relatives said the two were headed to Concord when the wreck happened.

?They?re just too young to be going through this,? she said.

No charges had been filed Tuesday night, Carpenter said.

While emergency crews were on the scene, a Rockwell Rural firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. Authorities said he was taken to a local area hospital for observation.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Recap: Put a Ring on It

Last week on The Real Housewives of Orange County, Slade asked Gretchen’s father for permission to propose, Alexis met with an acting coach and Vicki announced Briana’s marriage and then forced her daughter to have a sit-down with Brooks.

What could happen to these crazy housewives next?!? Read on for the exclusive THG +/- recap to find out!

-------------------------------------------

First up, Alexis is planning a birthday party for her twins fourth birthday. A Puppy Princess party. Because she calls them princesses and they love puppies. PERF! And then she leaves the party stylist for 10 minutes so she can go get a spray tan instead of doing party prep. Minus 10. One point for every minute you got sprayed, Alexis.

This party will be proof that Alexis really can do it all. Apparently she’s trying to be “Mom Enough.”

Slade Smily and Gretchen Rossi Photo

Slade is visiting a jeweler. He wants to buy Gretchen a ring and has invited Heather to go ring shopping with him. Maybe because Tamra and Vicki hate him and Alexis and Gretchen are on the outs. Weird. But I like Heather, so Plus 5 for inviting her for feedback.

Slade says he likes to “reverse engineer” everything. Instead of looking at what he can afford, he wants to look at what Gretchen would like and then go backwards. Heather chatted Gretchen up for the information.

The first ring he looks at? $250,000. The second? $37,000. And then he asks about imitation stones because it’s obvious that these are out of his price range. The way I understand it, the ring from a Cracker Jack box might be out of his price range.

Heather’s solution? Buy her a band. Gretchen’s just looking for the words and the sentiment anyway. Plus 10 to Heather for not laughing in his face at that “imitation stone” line.

Tamra’s meeting up with Terry to see about having her Simon tattoo surgically removed from her ring finger. She gets nervous and has to run to the bathroom and Terry and his nurse talk about how she’s a nervous pooper. Minus 5. It’s not as bad as Alexis’ nose gross but it’s still bad.

Eddie’s promised to get Tamra a ring if she gets the Simon tattoo removed. She didn’t tell him she was going to see Terry so he wouldn’t feel pressured.
Tamra has to get up from the table to go back to the bathroom. She quips that Simon’s still being a pain in her ass.

Finally, she’s prepped and she and Terry talk about how Tamra and Eddie will need to incorporate their kids into one family as he cuts a piece of skin off her finger. Wow. Plus 10 for not requesting a Valium.

Vicki’s brother Billy is still in town and their chatting about Briana’s elopement with Ryan. Billy’s concerned that Briana and Ryan don’t know much about each other. Vicki seems perturbed that Briana would still like to have a wedding where Donn and Vicki can give her away. But that’s weird because one of Vicki’s issues with Briana and Ryan’s marriage is that there was not wedding where she could give her daughter away. Hmmm.

Billy asks if Brooks would be at that wedding and Vicki says “yes. He’s my man.” Then talk turns to whether or not Donn is dating and after Billy says he’s sure Donn is, Vicki grills him for information. Minus 15.

It’s party day for Melania and Mackenna. Alexis sends Mackenna to get MAKEUP. And when she doesn’t look like she has makeup on, Alexis sends her back for MORE MAKEUP. She’s FOUR. Minus 50.

Alexis says when she was growing up birthday parties were a homemade cake with three or four best friends coming over and they were great parties. But she’s just dressed her daughters up like they’re auditioning for Toddlers and Tiaras and is throwing them a Puppy Princess Party? Minus another 20.
Gretchen and Heather meet up at Casa de Dubrow. Heather’s house is amazing. Truly. There’s a sitting area in the bathroom. The bathroom Heather doesn’t have to share with Terry.

Heather says the secret to a great marriage is separate bathrooms. Plus 15. Truth, Heather!

Eventually, talk turns to Gretchen and Slade and their future. Gretchen confirms, again, that she’s nervous about Slade’s debt and doesn’t want to marry him while that’s hanging over his head. She doesn’t feel like right now is the best time to get married. Heather tells Gretchen that she doesn’t think Slade understands where Gretchen is in regards to marriage right now.

Gretchen gets choked up when she says she can’t wrap her mind around not being with Slade.
Heather advises Gretchen to talk to Slade and then pours champagne. Plus 10.

In addition to a house full of puppies and mini princesses, Alexis has also hired standard sized princesses for the party. Alexis talks about herself in the third person while telling the party guests about the pulmonary embolism that nearly took her life after her daughters were born. Let’s remember that the guests at this party are FOUR. They probably cannot even say the WORDS pulmonary embolism. Minus 25.

Jim wore a tuxedo to walk Princess Melania and Princess Mackenna down the stairs and then changed right back into shorts and a tee shirt while Alexis rocked a cocktail dress and a tiara. Then they all went on a carriage ride. Because after this party, they’re broke and turning back into pumpkins and little ash girls.  Heather’s going to pick up their son Nicky from football. Plus 5 that she does her parent pick-ups herself.

Remember the audition Heather went on? She didn’t get the role. But she’s relieved. She thinks perhaps the role wasn’t very realistic for her life situation right now.

Terry says that what she does, she does so well - wife, mother, cook - and then he laughs. But she laughs, too. Plus 20 for being an awesome pair.
Back at the birthday party, Alexis is holding a two-month old. She wants another baby. Jim says he wants to wait until they’re grandparents.

“One more baby. One more. I promise I’ll never ask for another thing!” It’s not a puppy, Alexis, but you’ve got a back yard full of those ready for adoption. Minus 5.

Tamra and Eddie are out to dinner. First they talk business, real-estate for her fitness studio. Then Eddie says they should have a sleepover, kids and all, at his house. Tamra says that her kids don’t feel 100% comfortable in his house because they don’t spend a lot of time there. Eddie’s response is that they need to spend more time there so they’ll be more comfortable.

Tamra starts to cry and says she’s afraid if she puts the kids on him, he’ll leave. Eddie’s response: “I would’ve left a long time ago.” Plus 20.

Tamra’s still worried. Eddie doesn’t have any kids and she’s afraid. Eddie’s “taking on a girl who’s five years older with four kids.” And he’s hot.  Eddie says there’s a lot of hot girls in the world, but not all of them are smart and witty like her.  Plus 10.

Talk turns to Simon and Eddie says she needs to get his name off her finger. So she flashes her stitches. He says “I think I just sh*t a brick.” Tamra quips “I think you need to start sh*tting a diamond ring.” Boom, Tamra. Then Eddie tells her he wants to have sex. Such a man.

Briana and Vicki meet and Briana says Vicki’s never been alone to know what she wants out of life. Briana tells Vicki that she and her brother are concerned and Vicki needs to stop comparing Ryan to Brooks.

And then Briana tells her mom she feels like Brooks is an opportunist who doesn’t deserve Vicki. Plus 10. Vicki keeps defending Brooks and saying that she knows the truth about Brooks and Brooks has never lied to her and she’s a grown woman and she’s happy right now and excuses excuses excuses. Minus 15.

Your daughter may have eloped. The two of you may not have the relationship you think you do. But Vicki, Briana’s not being an idiot right now. You are.
Briana accuses Vicki of emotionally cheating on Donn with Brooks before their marriage was over. Which, according to Briana, is worse than physically cheating.

When Briana says she has concerns about Brooks, Vicki counters that she has concerns about Ryan, chief among them being that he didn’t ask her for Briana’s hand in marriage before whisking her away to a drive-through wedding chapel. But Brooks has four kids by three women, hasn’t paid his child support, and has a history of DUIs but drives Vicki’s car around town. Yeah. Yeah, Vicki, those are totally the same thing.
