Domestic Partnerships Advance As Wyoming Committee Kills Gay ...

A Wyoming House committee on Monday voted to advance a domestic partnerships bill after it killed a gay marriage bill.

The 9-member Republican-controlled House Corporations, Elections & Political Subdivisions Committee voted 5-4 against Rep. Cathy Connolly's marriage bill. But later, with a 7-2 vote, the committee approved a measure seeking to recognize the relationships of gay and lesbian couples with domestic partnerships, a bill also sponsored by Connolly, a Democrat from Albany County. Connolly first introduced such a bill in 2007.

Jeran Artery, chair of Wyoming Equality, the state's largest gay rights advocate, called the vote ?historic.?

?Today marks the first time a bill has moved forward in the Wyoming legislature which would provide essential protections for LGBT families,? he said in a statement.

In his testimony to the committee, Artery explained that the laws would protect all families across the state.

?We know that there are LGBT people living in nearly every county across the state, and many of those people are raising families,? he said. ?All families deserve to live safely and securely without fear that basic decisions about their loved ones will not be honored. We know there is still a lot of work to do, but we applaud the actions of this committee and are committed to working with our lawmakers to ensure that legal protections are extended to all families throughout Wyoming.?

The bill moves to the full House as early as Tuesday.

How to Find Or Be Passionate Talent [4 Ways]

In the movie?Serendipity, Dean says to Jonathan:

?You know the Greeks didn?t write obituaries. They only asked one question after a man dies: ?Did he have passion???

In my experience as a hiring manager, I look for individuals who possess passion for their work. This is crucial to help ensure a right match is not only made for the job but for the organization?s culture as well.

serendipityToday, there are a number of avenues hiring managers can leverage to learn about and evaluate job seekers. When doing so, I look at four major areas for signs of passion:

Resume

  • History: I review the job candidate?s history to see what they?ve done and what they?re doing, looking for patterns of activity that indicate increasing roles and responsibilities. While these may not directly indicate passion, they reflect stability and a predictable career path. If the career path doesn?t look normal, I look for indications of why their occupation took a left turn.
  • Activities: I look for activity outside of the office that support continuing education ? specifically the pursuit of advanced degrees and certifications.
  • Achievements: It?s important to look for awards and other achievements, indicating how they have excelled, specifically individual, leadership and industry-specific awards.?

Social media

  • Profile:?On social profiles that reflect an individual?s occupation, I look for indications of pride. For example, on LinkedIn I would look for awards, speaking engagements or promotions.

  • Engagement: Passion can be seen in what they share about their vocation. Individuals who share information, articles and news that relate to their job stand out as potential experts in their field.
  • Groups: Participating in?social media groups?affiliated with their field shows that they?re interested in learning and sharing knowledge with their peers.
  • Online Activities: Blogging activities (whether they manage their own or participate in other occupational-related blogs) reflect a deeper connection to their chosen profession. The extra time spent by these individuals may demonstrate a dedication to their field.

Interview

  • Presentation: I look for a candidate who presents themselves in a?confident and energetic manner?? proud of their skills, experience and accomplishments.
  • Involvement: Individuals who employ their skills outside of the office may reflect passion. Advancing their understanding through self-study, reading and hobbies, as well as utilizing their skills in volunteer or community activity may reflect that a job is more than just a paycheck.

Reference checks

  • Professional contacts: I listen to what former employers say about a candidate?s work product and work ethic for signs of passion and dedication.
  • Personal contacts: Personal references can be valuable as they may offer a more candid look into a job candidate?s interests and background. Personal references have the ability to reveal a candidate?s passion from their everyday life outside of the office.

While these areas are not absolute for finding passionate talent, they may narrow the field to those candidates who you should consider for the job. What do you look and listen for to judge a job seeker?s passion? Let us know in the comments below.

Some recent surveys, however, suggests that ESN are failing to meet expectations in the large enterprise space.

These surveys show that ESN implementations are weighed down by sharp drop in user interest after an initial surge of fervor. Another common hindrance mentioned is lack of executive buy in.

Essentially, researchers are finding that in many companies there is a dearth of content creators and insufficient interest on the part of intended content consumers.

NASA rocket to spur dazzling light show

NASA will launch a rocket Tuesday night on a mission that promises to put on a spectacular, albeit brief, light show over the U.S. East Coast that may be visible to stargazers along the Atlantic Seaboard, weather permitting.

Unsuspecting observers of the artificial night sky display? may be puzzled and amazed, so before you make that phone call to your local media outlet or police station, here is why this is happening and when you might see it.

The bright phenomenon will be caused by an experiment aboard a NASA sounding rocket. As part the mission, the rocket will release a chemical tracer that should create two bright, red-colored lithium vapor trails in space that may be seen by observers across the mid-Atlantic region, and possibly from even further away.

The rocket will be fired from NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility on Virginia's Atlantic coast. Liftoff is slated to occur as early as 5:30 p.m. EST. The suborbital rocket, which can launch high above Earth but not orbit the planet, will be launched to test technology for gathering science data during future projects. [ NASA Rocket Launches Light Up Night Sky? (Photos) ]

You can watch the launch live on Space.com here via a webcast that will begin at 4:30 p.m. EST.

By rocket's red glare
The launch window for tonight's NASA night light show opens at 5:30 p.m. EST and extends to 6:50 p.m. EST, but the optimum target time is 5:45 p.m. EST. NASA intends to photograph the resulting red luminescent trails from Wallops Island and from an aircraft as well.

You can submit any amazing photos of the launch or the resulting night sky show to Space.com here: spacephotos@space.com.

Should weather conditions be unfavorable, the firings will be deferred to another night. Alternate dates run from Thursday through Friday (Jan. 30 to Feb. 1).

The sounding rocket that will be used to create the two NASA-made glowing cloud trails will be a Terrier-Improved Orion. In this technology test launch, two canisters in the rocket's payload section will contain solid metal lithium rods or chips embedded in a thermite cake. The thermite is ignited and produces heat to vaporize the lithium.

Once the vapor is released in space, it can be detected and tracked optically. The rocket will eject two streams of lithium that will be illuminated at high altitudes by the sun (which will be below the local horizon at ground level).?

Libby West, mission project manager with the NASA Sounding Rocket Program at Wallops, said: "This launch is a technology test flight for two upcoming missions. We will be testing two different methods for creating the lithium vapor to determine which configuration is best for observing various science phenomena in space."

During the flight, one vapor trail will occur at an altitude of about 72 miles (116 kilometers) and the second will occur at about 78 miles (126 km) up. When heated, the lithium rods change to lithium vapor and small amounts of lithium oxide. The thermite reaction produces iron and aluminum oxide. The lithium combustion process poses no threat to the public during the release in space.?

A NASA map for the mission shows the trajectory of the rocket launch, as well as expanding circles indicating the visibility of the lithium vapor streaks at different times.

In the map, the blue line extending out from the launch site toward the 4 o'clock position represents the trajectory of the rocket; at the end of the blue line is where the lithium clouds will be released.? The outer yellow circle extends for a radius of about 400 miles (645 km), marking the boundary where the clouds will appear at a maximum altitude of 10 degrees above the horizon. This is roughly comparable to the width of your clenched fist held at arm's length.

The key to making a sighting is to have a clear, unobstructed view of the horizon in the direction of Wallops Island. For example, a viewer in Raleigh, N.C., should look toward the northeast; in New Haven, Conn., you should face southwest; in Philadelphia, Pa., it'll be toward the southeast. [Amazing Stargazer Photos for January 2013 (Gallery) ]

In the table accompanying this guide, I have calculated the altitude and direction of where you should look for 15 selected cities.

If you live along the Atlantic Seaboard and live outside of the yellow circle, you should still make an attempt to try and see the lithium clouds . At an altitude of 78 miles, theoretically they might be seen as far as 850 miles (1,370 km) from the release point. Their altitude will be less than 10 degrees above the horizon, but assuming your sky is free of any cloud cover or haze and you have an unobstructed view in the direction of Wallops Island, you certainly will have a chance of getting a glimpse of this atmospheric experiment.?

Viewers as far north as southern Quebec and Nova Scotia and as far south as northern Florida might be able to catch the clouds as low as five degrees above the horizon.? ?

For places situated to the west, toward the Ohio and Tennessee river valleys, there will be a caveat in that the sun will have only recently set and the twilight sky may still be too bright to see the artificial clouds.

The gusty jet stream
Looking up along the trajectory from the ground, such chemical trails often appear distorted in complex ways. Among other things, their shape provides scientists with precise data on wind speeds and directions at various levels of the upper atmosphere. [ Earth's Atmosphere from Top to Bottom (Infographic) ]

The jet stream at nearly 80 miles (128 km) above the Earth's surface is much higher than the one commonly reported in weather forecasts. The winds found in this upper jet stream typically have speeds well over 300 mph (482 kph) and create rapid transport from the Earth's mid latitudes to the polar regions.

This jet stream is also located in the same region where strong electrical currents occur in the ionosphere. It is therefore a region with a lot of electrical turbulence, of the type that can adversely affect satellite and radio communications.

NASA plans to launch two more missions his year that will use the lithium trails to assist scientists in observing events in space. The first launch will blast off in April from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, located out in the central Pacific Ocean. The second flight will occur in June, again at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

Last year, NASA launched five sounding rockets in five minutes to create a spectacular light show that amazed stargazers all along the Eastern Seaboard.

"We?re being invaded!"
NASA used to conduct chemical cloud experiments from Wallops Island much more frequently during the 1960s, '70s and '80s, usually in the predawn hours when most people were asleep. Chemicals such as tri-methyl aluminum, barium and tri-ethylborane were used, often creating rather exotic colors of red, green and purple.

When such launches took place during convenient evening hours they usually took people by surprise. In March 1967, when three clouds were released around 7 p.m. they were followed by countless numbers of people all along the East Coast calling newspapers and police stations, asking for explanations of the strange sightings. One man described the rocket residue as "red balls of fire."

In January 1975, a barium cloud was released at around 5:30 p.m. in the evening. As luck would have it, the town of Riverhead, N.Y., was hit by a power outage at the very same moment that the cloud appeared in the sky.

This resulted in a panic among the local residents who believed that the cloud had something to do with the loss of their power. One man called the local police station and shouted: "We?re being invaded!? I can see the spaceship in the sky right now ? it's glowing with a greenish color and expanding as it's draining us of our electric power!"

'Fruitvale,' 'Blood Brother' win Sundance Awards

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? The dramatic film "Fruitvale" and the documentary "Blood Brother" won over audiences and Sundance Film Festival judges.

Both American films won audience awards and grand jury prizes Saturday at the Sundance Awards.

"Fruitvale" is based on the true story of Oscar Grant, who was 22 years old when he was shot and killed in a public transit station in Oakland, Calif. First-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler wrote and directed the dramatic narrative.

"This project was about humanity, about human beings and how we treat each other; how we treat the people that we love the most, and how we treat the people that we don't know," the 26-year-old said as he accepted the final prize of the night. "To get this award means that it had a profound impact on the audience that saw it, on the people that were responsible for picking it up. And this goes back to my home, to the Bay Area, where Oscar Grant lived, breathed, slept, loved, fought, had fun, and survived for 22 years."

Fox Searchlight founder and Sundance juror Tom Rothman said "Fruitvale" was recognized for "its skillful realization, its devastating emotional impact and its moral and social urgency ? and for anyone out there who thinks for one second that movies don't matter and can't make a difference in the world.

"This will not be the last time you guys walk to a podium," he added.

The U.S. documentary winner, "Blood Brother" follows a young American, Rocky Braat, who moved to India to work with orphans infected with HIV.

"This means so much to so many kids," director Steve Hoover said as he accepted the award.

The Cambodian film "A River Changes Course" won the grand jury prize for international documentary, and a narrative film from South Korea, "Jiseul," claimed the grand jury prize for dramatic world cinema.

How You Can Benefit from a Business Communication Course

Effective business communication starts with finding your voice and the right tone for a specific audience.

Business memos, letters and reports can benefit from an authoritative, expert style. When you can write and communicate well within your industry and with your clients, your professional peers will take notice, and you may begin to rise through the ranks.

business communications

Speak Effectively, Accomplish More

Effective communications can increase workplace productivity. Time is money when it comes to explaining details to others, and your communication skills can pay off when you speak clearly and communicate well with peers either in your office or with a global team.

One call or video chat to deliver instructions, sometimes across language barriers, can save everyone time later and avoid follow-up calls or misunderstood communications that could jeopardize work or deadline.

Improve Your Writing, Boost Your Opportunities

A command of grammar and basic language skills in writing can produce crisp, concise written communications.

Your coworkers may appreciate memos that offer clear explanation or instructions, and your customers can benefit from targeted messages designed to increase sales. Everyone can benefit from a well-written email.

As you develop your writing talent, your supervisors may see your skill as something that can help motivate, sell a product or inspire others in the office, creating more career opportunities for you.

Other Aspects of Business Communication

To gain a level of confidence in oral and written communications, courses focusing on these skills can be beneficial. If you are shy or withdrawn and feel uncomfortable communicating to a large audience, taking a course can help in the following ways:

  • Gain basic writing skills: With these courses, you can improve your writing and develop your skills in writing informational, persuasive communications. The more you practice, the faster and easier this task may become.
  • Find your voice: You can learn the distinctions of a writing voice for an internal or external audience including nuances that resonate whether you are speaking to coworkers or clients.
  • Become more comfortable engaging others: Having a relaxed attitude is valuable when you are meeting with peers at conferences or taking a lead role in meetings. Your abilities and poise under pressure can help set the tone for the rest of the room.

Mediate, Motivate

Learning more about how to effectively discuss issues with others can be important in areas such as mediation. You may draw from all of your communication knowledge that you acquire in a basic course to inspire, manage conflicts in an office setting and keep everyone on task.

Business Communication?Training? Can Help You Update Your Job Skills

Business communication is more than just speaking and writing. Adopting new communication skills can put you on the leading edge of industry public relations and could help you build a new career with advanced skill sets.

Other elements that a basic course could introduce you to may include:

  • Desktop publishing and managing websites and blogs: Not only can you learn more about Web technology but also learn different ways to create effective content for a company website or blog.
  • Video conferencing using Google Hangouts, Skype or FaceTime: Verbal skills can shine in these arenas once you learn the fundamentals of presentation and delivering a clear message.
  • Social media cultivation and management: This growing field is becoming more important for businesses in terms of marketing, promotion and reputation management.

Business leaders are those who can rise to the challenge and present a charismatic version of themselves to the public through their verbal skills and ability to write effectively.

Your journey on this path could begin with what you learn initially in a basic business communication course. Your first lessons could be the foundation for future growth in your career.

Old-Fashioned Motherhood: From the Comments: Frustration in ...

Dear friends,

This morning, I checked my e-mail inbox to find that I had a new comment on an older post of mine called "The Incredible Shrinking Family". I could feel the pain of the writer so clearly in her words, and I wanted to reach out to her. Who of us have not been frustrated, tired, and just plain worn-out?

Here's what she wrote:

Hi! I came across your blog today and loved reading this post. I agree with everything you have to say ... in principle. But in practice I find this very difficult. I want to love children and love being a mother, but I just don't!
I have two darling little girls who I love, but I don't love being a mother. Pregnancy was miserable, the sleep deprivation of newborns was horrendous and the tantrums and potty training of toddlers has been torture! Like you say, it takes sacrifice, but I sometimes feel like it is just too much for me. I long for a life outside of my children, for some part of me to be left-over at the end of the day for my husband, for something besides diapers and disciplining and dishes!
So yes, children are important and families are vital and I believe in the LDS doctrine of the family ... but I just can't have more children. I feel it would be disastrous for me, for my marriage and for the children we already have. So I guess what I'm saying is that I totally get why some women do not want to have children or do not want to have a lot of children. I understand what they are feeling!
I would have never guessed that I would be saying this. As a young LDS teen, I yearned for a large family. But now, when reality has set in, I am just not enjoying it at all! I feel like overall I have a good attitude around my children and love them, do all of the good stay-at-home-mom things, but deep-down, I am miserable. Any advice?

I know that often people may think that my posts are so idealistic that I must never have bad days or frustrations, or a bad attitude. I'm sorry if this is a disappoinment, ladies, but I have had those days when I want to throw in the towel. I have moments where I hold my head in my hands and think "What have I done?!"

:-)

But those days don't last forever (Thank goodness!) and with the Lord's help we can do the difficult and succeed-- and have joy! (I promise!!!)

Here was my response to her, and to all moms who have those times and seasons where they feel they can't take another step, change another diaper, or wash one more dish:

I am so sorry that you are so overwhelmed and discouraged. Boy, have I been there! But there really is hope and peace on the horizon...

First of all, you are deep in the trenches of one of the hardest times of motherhood! I advise you take a deep breath and try to see into your future five, ten or fifteen years from now.

You will NOT always be sleep deprived and mired in the difficulties of trying to be and do everything on your own. Those little ones you have now WILL grow, they will learn to do more for themselves, and they will not always be so demanding.

The time you take now to patiently, lovingly train them will buy you more liberty and breathing room in your not-too-distant future. Is it hard? YES. But from experience, I can tell you, that when you work hard at training those first few little ones, then they become more helpful to you in your duties AND with any other little ones that may be in your future.

Toddler-hood really is the time that ALL moms want to throw in the towel and say "I'm not cut out for this!" You are FAR from being alone in those feelings, I promise!

It is okay to take a break and let your body and your heart heal for a time. But the secret to that and to surviving and moving forward in everything is to PRAY. HARD. Ask for a blessing from your husband, now and then. Pray for peace. For direction. For patience.?

Good grief, I even once had to start praying that I could LOVE my kids!!! LOL! The beauty and blessing was that MY PRAYERS WORKED.

Anything worth doing is difficult-- that's the test of this life. But you don't need to hold your breath as you try to make it through the difficult years. Come up to the surface and breathe deeply in the Father's love, mercy and help.

None of us can succeed at this alone. We need Christ, and He is willing and waiting to take those troubles and burdens from us if we will just give them to Him.

Please don't struggle alone when you don't have to! The Lord loves you and sees every sacrifice and tear and sleepless night.?

Don't worry about having another baby right now. Just work on your relationship with Christ. Then everything else will fall into place.

We can "do all things through Christ." But we should not run faster than we have strength. We NEED to take time to be healed by the Lord. He will give us all we need and then some, helping us to do all things "in wisdom and order."

I know the writer and I would love to hear any other advice from my readers. Do you have more to add?

With love to all my sisters in the motherhood trenches,

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Recent satellite photos show North Korea could be almost ready to carry out its threat to conduct a nuclear test, a U.S. research institute said Friday.

The images of the Punggye-ri site, where nuclear tests were conducted in 2006 and 2009, reveal that over the past month, roads have been kept clear of snow and that North Koreans may have been sealing the tunnel into a mountainside where a nuclear device would be detonated.

But it remains difficult to discern North Korea's true intentions, as a test would be conducted underground.

The analysis was provided to The Associated Press by 38 North, the website of the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. The latest image was taken Wednesday.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission declared its plans Thursday after the U.N. Security Council tightened sanctions in response to a December long-range rocket launch. It described the plans as part of a "new phase" of combat with the United States, which retains 28,000 troops in South Korea and which it blames for leading the U.N. bid to punish Pyongyang.

The North said a nuclear test was part of "upcoming" action but did not say exactly when or where it would take place.

38 North concludes that the Punggye-ri site, in the country's northeast, "appears to continue to be at a state of readiness that would allow the North to move forward with a test in a few weeks or less once the leadership in Pyongyang gives the order."

South Korean media have cited intelligence officials as saying technical preparations appear complete, and the North could be ready to test within days of making a decision to do so.

U.S. officials confirmed Friday that some trucks have been seen moving around the site. One official said the U.S. is not ruling out that the test could happen in the near future.

But the officials cautioned that, as in previous tests, because it would be done underground, the U.S. may not know much before it actually happens. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss intelligence matters publicly.

In 2006, North Korea detonated a nuclear device just six days after it announced its plans to do so, and in 2009, 26 days after the announcement. Both tests came weeks after the U.N. Security Council had condemned it for long-range rocket launches.

"While the test site appears to continue to be at a high state of readiness, it's anyone's guess when a detonation might occur. The North Koreans may do it tomorrow, some other day or they may decide to wait until a meaningful date like Kim Jong Il's birthday on Feb. 16," said Joel Wit, a former U.S. State Department official and the editor of 38 North.

Anniversaries related to members of North Korea's ruling dynasty, such as former leader Kim Jong Il, who died in December 2011, are marked with great fanfare in the authoritarian nation.

In its assessment of the preparations at Punggye-ri, 38 North noted that there was considerable snowfall there in November 2012. It said subsequent clearing operations as well as tracks in the snow in the remote area reveal activity at buildings and on roads near the possible test tunnel.

A satellite image taken Jan. 4 shows 30 or more personnel, possibly soldiers or security guards, in formation in the yard of the main administrative buildings at the site.

A Dec. 24 image shows a pile of material in the same yard. Its purpose is uncertain, but it could be intended for sealing the tunnel. By the time of Wednesday's photo, the pile had shrunk, which could indicate operations have begun to seal the tunnel, according to the analysis.

Dear HN: Let's stop with the eBook stuff - Hacker News

I came to HN because I was interested in how people were using technology to do something interesting for themselves and others. Not math puzzles, or clever programming hacks, or ruminations on various celebrities. This is "making stuff people want"

"Making stuff people want" is a broad mandate. If you can show me new and applicable information about people making money on e-books, I want to see it. If one guy is leveraging Amazon Mechanical Turk to solve CAPCHTAs for gamers, I'm interested. If Chinese firms are selling time levelling up characters for rich westerners, I'd like to know about it.

So as long as HN has articles about people making stuff other people want -- how they decided what to make, how they marketed it, how they worked closely with the target market, and so on -- count me in. I love Erlang Innards as much as the next guy, but after years of reading tons and tons of minutiae around technology, I'd like to see a bit of deeper analysis about how to do something useful with my life, not fluffy nerd candy about whether Haskell is exactly as fast as C or not.

That's my opinion. It's much different than yours, and it's much different than many others, I suspect. This is why we have a voting system, no?

-----

I respectfully disagree with your assertion for the following reasons:

1) While this may be called "hacker" news, there are a great deal of discussions that are about things that hackers are interested in that don't necessarily pertain to hacking.

2) This site is undeniably linked to technological entrepreneurship. eBooks, particularly when they cover something technical, are not only relevant, but the way in which you can make money with them are akin to being able to put together a good website and make money from it.

3) It's not at all uncommon for folks who have worked in the startup business to release or write an eBook. Many things they learn in the process can be applicable to things that are not bookseller related.

In short: this is a site for hackers, not about hacking. There are many other forums out there for such things.

-----

The site is Hacker News - not Programmer News. I understand that there is obviously a strong lean towards programming when thinking of hacking, but hacking can apply to broader topics than just programming. A lot of people are interested in eBooks and marketing and if the post helps you think about those things in a new manner and "hack" the methods of writing, publishing, and marketing your eBook, then I think it's a valid thing to post. If you check out the guidelines for posts on HN, you will see:

"Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity."

I think that a lot of these posts will satisfy a ton of people's intellectual curiosity. If it didn't, why would it make it to the front page in the first place?

Not to mention that if you extrapolate some of the ideas found in these sorts of posts, you could potentially apply them to things like programming and startups. Seems like a beneficial thing to me to have on the site.

I won't go into whether or not some of these posts are that well written or that incisive, but I think a lot of people would agree that they belong here.

-----

I'm not a programmer, though I have some knowledge of programming.

I do think I have a hacker's mindset. That's why I read this site.

When I've posted comments explaining how I created my sidebusiness self publishing books, they've been well received. People here want to know about it.

I make around $1,000 per month in physical and ebook sales. The way I've done it could easily be replicated in a technical field. And from what I've gathered, how to do it is not common knowledge.

So while it's not programming per se, I don't think this site is about programming.

-------------------------------

How I Did It

Since I've alluded to how I've done it, I'll give a top level overview. My book is Hacking The LSAT. Irrelevant to almost everyone here, highly relevant to law school applicants.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0988127903

Createspace allows you to easily publish a physical book on amazon, and keep around 35% of the print price, before discount.

Lightning source lets you sell on other sites such as Barnes and noble, and potentially cause amazon to discount your book.

ELance let me find outsourcers to proofread, format and design my books.

Blogs in your niche are good potential affiliate partners. About 50% of my revenue comes from one affiliate blog.

Relevant forums are a great marketing venue. Hacker News and subreddits may be one of them. Make useful contributions. I created the lsat subreddit, and have an ongoing ask me anything at the other main lsat forum.

While writing, the internet is not your friend. Consider disabling it while writing. I did this for a month by moving to a country without Internet, and my productivity increase 50% (measured in good words written)

Reviews are important on amazon. Give away review copies, and ask people to write honest reviews.

All of this only works if you write a good book. Consider doing it, a good book or e-book can reall set you sort in your niche, even if it's self published.

I haven't gone deep into cross formatting, but calibre is a great conversion program, and liber writer does formatting for kindle. If publishing a kindle book, buy a kindle to test it. Kindle formatting is finicky.

-----

Was it? I didn't mean it that way. The first part or the second part?

I just wanted to show that the community has found such discussions valuable in the past, how it can be done, and what kind of results you can get even from a mid ranked book in a small niche.

-----

No, I didn't. Normally I'm pretty self aware, but we all have our gaping blind spots. No need to be rude.

I can just delete the comment if the whole thing reeks of self promotion.

edit: I typed it out on my phone, which makes it very hard to review the whole thing.

-----

Whether or not an article gets on the front page (or close) depends on whether the herd vote enough for that article, you have a method to determine that, called a vote.

After all, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

-----

>>>I'd prefer that spot on the top list to be about programming or something closely related

Now wait a minute. It's people who are putting it up there. Do we have the right to vote or not? And there are lessons in selling eBooks that can be applied to other things too.

-----

Before the internet, before the PC, before even ENIAC, there were writers who made money writing what sold rather than literature. They were considered hacks.

The quintessential person banging away at a keyboard is a writer not a programmer.

-----

hacking: present participle of hack (Verb)
    1. Cut with rough or heavy blows. 2. Ride a horse for pleasure or exercise.

-----

HN has a voting system, so what appears on the front page are articles HN readers want or find interesting.

If you have a problem with a front page article, you should know that some people found it interesting and that after all, you can't agree with everybody on HN.

What you are suggesting is a matt2000'ing of HN. (matt2000 being your username.)

Advertising Property Management Company Online: Pay-Per-Click ...

advertising property management company - pay per clickToday at Fourandhalf, we are going to help you become an educated consumer when it comes to advertising your property management company on the Internet. The first thing you need to do when choosing how to market your business on the Internet is to identify your goal or purpose. Marketers often focus on a number of things such as exposure, branding and reputation. The bottom line for most of us is growth. If you are looking to employ digital marketing services, you probably want to grow your business.

Why is the Internet the right place for growth?

When you use the Internet for marketing, you use a pull strategy instead of a push strategy. As property managers, you focus on a specific segment of the population. You try to reach people who own homes that are not owner-occupied. You look for people who manage properties themselves as well as reluctant landlords and property investors. An example of a push strategy would be a television commercial. You pay a lot of money to get a commercial on television, which gives you exposure to a lot of people you don?t want, and cannot possibly target all of ?the people you really want to reach. So for businesses like property management companies, this is the wrong method.

The Internet uses pull marketing. You cater your content and information to people who are already searching for property management in your town. You get targeted access to people who are searching for questions you can answer, such as how to rent a house, how much rent to charge, etc. There are different avenues of digital marketing that can be included in your strategy. One such avenue is pay-per-click.

Pay-Per-Click

Pay-per-click advertising is a quick shot of adrenaline for your business. You tell Google that you are willing to pay $2 to $5 per click to be on the front page for particular keywords. For example, if you?re a San Francisco property manager, you want to be listed near the front anytime someone searches for ?San Francisco property management.?

Having a strategic landing page will help you tremendously with pay-per-click. You want to make sure that when your potential prospects click on the company listing that you paid for, they will go to a specific landing page. Don?t send them to the generic front page of your website. The landing page should outline the advantages of your company specific to the customer your ad is trying to reach. We always recommend having a brief video that pitches your business, as well as a phone number and a ?Contact Us? form or button. The landing page alone will increase your conversion by up to 50 percent.

The company you hire to help you with pay-per-click needs to understand your business and the keywords that equal money to you. Your digital marketing company also needs to understand and respect your budget. You should get to determine whether you want to spend $10 a day or $1,500 a month. The beauty of pay-per-click is that you can adjust your budget as you go. It gets you real clients, but it requires an investment from you. You need to hire a pay-per-click company to manage your campaign, and you also need to pay Google or Facebook or whatever platform you choose.

DETROIT A team of Wayne State University School of Medicine physicians will seek to develop methods to better identify women at increased risk for stroke using a new type of professional education grant.

The study, "Improving the Identification of Women at Increased Risk for Stroke in an Urban Medical Center," is funded by a $492,800 grant from Pfizer Inc. and will be overseen by Seemant Chaturvedi, M.D., WSU professor of neurology. Others involved in the study include Lavoisier Cardozo, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.R.C.P., professor of internal medicine and chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine; Diane Levine, M.D., associate professor of internal medicine; Neelima Thati, M.D., professor of internal medicine; Maribeth Mateo, M.D., assistant professor of family medicine and public health sciences; and Ramesh Madhavan, M.D., D.M., assistant professor of neurology.

Chaturvedi and the team will study the rate of compliance for following recommended guidelines to identify women at risk for stroke by WSU and Wayne State University Physician Group (WSUPG) doctors in five WSUPG clinics. The findings will lead to a variety of live and online Continuing Medical Education activities designed to educate doctors on how to improve compliance with these guidelines. Later, the rate of patients receiving the appropriate screening and treatments to prevent stroke will be reassessed.

"The study will try to identify areas where stroke risk factor reduction is suboptimal," said Chaturvedi, who also serves as director of the Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center Stroke Program. "For example, we will identify patients with hypertension not under control, patients with obesity not exercising, and patients with atrial fibrillation not being treated with anticoagulants. With education and medical alerts, we hope to improve treatment of these risk factors and more."

The study is part of a new emerging concept. Previously, pharmaceutical companies awarded much smaller grants for didactic CME sessions such as grand rounds or a one-day symposium.

David Pieper, Ph.D., assistant dean for Continuing Medical Education (CME) for the School of Medicine, said there has been a nationwide movement by the CME community to try to integrate CME into clinical quality improvement initiatives. One method for accomplishing this is a new type of CME called "Performance Improvement CME," in which physicians can receive up to 20 category 1 CME credits for measuring the percentage of their patients meeting treatment guidelines for certain conditions, designing methods to improve, and then re-measuring percent compliance.

Pfizer officials, Pieper explained, recently decided to move in this direction by changing the way the company contributes to CME programs. The company now spends 10 percent of its CME funds on grand rounds or symposiums. The remaining 90 percent is invested in projects in which Pfizer announces requests for proposals and CME providers submit proposals for large projects designed to improve physician performance in certain areas of patient care.

"There are a lot of advantages for us to participate in this kind of project," Pieper said. "We will attempt to improve the screening and treatments our patients receive. Our physicians receive a lot of CME credits (without leaving their practice site). The projects will facilitate our residency programs in meeting new accreditation standards involving quality improvement, and may enhance our clinics in reaching certain quality benchmarks."
