NEW YORK (AP) ? Dule Hill will be tapping into his dancing roots when he joins Broadway's "After Midnight," a musical celebrating Duke Ellington's years at the famous Cotton Club nightclub in Harlem.
Producers said Wednesday the actor and trained tap dancer best known for starring in USA's hit detective series "Psych," will play the host of the show, presenting the sound and glamor of the Harlem Renaissance.
Performances start Oct. 18 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, with an official opening night set for Nov. 3.
Hill was last on Broadway as Spoon, a lawyer-turned-budding novelist, in Lydia R. Diamond's thoughtful family drama "Stick Fly" in 2011. Hill joins the already announced Grammy Award- and "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino in the lively show that will feature 17 musicians and 25 vocalists and dancers.
Emmy Award-nominated for his work as Charlie Young on "The West Wing," Hill first came to prominence as The Kid opposite Savion Glover and Jeffrey Wright in "Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk." Born and raised in New Jersey, Hill began attending dance school when he was 3 and received his first break years later as the understudy to Glover in "The Tap Dance Kid" on Broadway.
Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle with musical direction by Wynton Marsalis, the show appeared off-Broadway last year at New York City Center under the name "Cotton Club Parade." Songs include "Stormy Weather," ''I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "I've Got the World on a String."
Hill may get a work-out in the show, which off-Broadway had no fewer than 24 numbers with dancing that included the Savoy swing and the Charleston. Veteran singer and dancer Brandon Victor Dixon played the role at New York City Center.
Legendary performers such as the Nicholas Brothers, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and a teenage Lena Horne all performed at the Cotton Club in the 1920s. The music and dancing will be augmented by Langston Hughes poetry.

Gliese 667C reexamined
Gliese 667C is a very well-studied star. Just over one third of the mass of the Sun, it is part of a triple star system known as Gliese 667 (also referred to as GJ 667), 22 light-years away in the constellation of Scorpius (The Scorpion). This is quite close to us within the Sun's neighbourhood and much closer than the star systems investigated using telescopes such as the planet-hunting Kepler space telescope.
Previous studies of Gliese 667C had found that the star hosts three planets (eso0939 - http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0939/, eso1214 - http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso1214/) with one of them in the habitable zone. Now, a team of astronomers led by Guillem Anglada-Escud of the University of Gttingen, Germany and Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire, UK, has reexamined the system. They have added new HARPS observations, along with data from ESO's Very Large Telescope, the W.M. Keck Observatory and the Magellan Telescopes, to the already existing picture [1]. The team has found evidence for up to seven planets around the star [2].
These planets orbit the third fainter star of a triple star system. Viewed from one of these newly found planets the two other suns would look like a pair of very bright stars visible in the daytime and at night they would provide as much illumination as the full Moon. The new planets completely fill up the habitable zone of Gliese 667C, as there are no more stable orbits in which a planet could exist at the right distance to it.
"We knew that the star had three planets from previous studies, so we wanted to see whether there were any more," says Tuomi. "By adding some new observations and revisiting existing data we were able to confirm these three and confidently reveal several more. Finding three low-mass planets in the star's habitable zone is very exciting!"
Three of these planets are confirmed to be super-Earths planets more massive than Earth, but less massive than planets like Uranus or Neptune that are within their star's habitable zone, a thin shell around a star in which water may be present in liquid form if conditions are right. This is the first time that three such planets have been spotted orbiting in this zone in the same system [3].
"The number of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy is much greater if we can expect to find several of them around each low-mass star instead of looking at ten stars to look for a single potentially habitable planet, we now know we can look at just one star and find several of them," adds co-author Rory Barnes (University of Washington, USA).
Compact systems around Sun-like stars have been found to be abundant in the Milky Way. Around such stars, planets orbiting close to the parent star are very hot and are unlikely to be habitable. But this is not true for cooler and dimmer stars such as Gliese 667C. In this case the habitable zone lies entirely within an orbit the size of Mercury's, much closer in than for our Sun. The Gliese 667C system is the first example of a system where such a low-mass star is seen to host several potentially rocky planets in the habitable zone.
The ESO scientist responsible for HARPS, Gaspare Lo Curto, remarks: "This exciting result was largely made possible by the power of HARPS and its associated software and it also underlines the value of the ESO archive. It is very good to also see several independent research groups exploiting this unique instrument and achieving the ultimate precision."
And Anglada-Escud concludes: "These new results highlight how valuable it can be to re-analyse data in this way and combine results from different teams on different telescopes."

Gliese 667C reexamined
Gliese 667C is a very well-studied star. JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Nelson Mandela's health has deteriorated and he is now in critical condition, the South African government said Sunday.
The office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that he had visited the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening and was informed by the medical team that Mandela's condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.
"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands," Zuma said in the statement, using Mandela's clan name.
Zuma also met Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, at the hospital in Pretoria and discussed the former leader's condition, according to the statement. Zuma was accompanied on the visit by Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of the country's ruling party, the African National Congress.
Mandela, who became South Africa's first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994, was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.
In the statement, Zuma also discussed the government's acknowledgement a day earlier that an ambulance carrying Mandela to the hospital two weeks ago had engine trouble, requiring the former president to be transferred to another ambulance for his journey to the hospital.
"There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care," Zuma said. "The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report."
Zuma appealed to South Africans and the rest of the world to pray for Mandela, his family and the medical team that is attending to him.
On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other leaders of the African National Congress to Mandela's home. Zuma said at the time that Mandela was in good shape, but the footage ? the first public images of Mandela in nearly a year ? showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.
Mandela was jailed for 27 years under white racist rule and was released in 1990. He then played a leading role in steering the divided country from the apartheid era to democracy, becoming South Africa's first black president in all-race elections in 1994.
As a result of his sacrifice and peacemaking efforts, he is seen by many around the world as a symbol of reconciliation.
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Gary David Goldberg, creator of the 1980s NBC sitcom "Family Ties," died Sunday following a battle with brain cancer, according to media reports. He was 68.
Born in Brooklyn, Goldberg began writing his career as a writer working for "The Bob Newhart Show," moving on to "The Tony Randall Show" and "Lou Grant," serving as writer and producer on both series.
After founding his own production company Ubu Productions (named after his dog, and featuring the line "Sit, Ubu, sit" in the closing credits for its shows; see video below), Goldberg created "Family Ties," which propelled Michael J. Fox into stardom as Alex P. Keaton, the Reagan Era, conservative son of liberal parents. The series ran for seven seasons.
Goldberg would later go on to work with Fox on the sitcom "Spin City," which Goldberg co-created with Bill Lawrence.
"Everyone has a mentor (or two hopefully) that touches his/her life," Lawrence tweeted Sunday night. "Gary Goldberg passed away today. Wish I had thanked him more."
The website for Ubu Productions and Goldberg's website have not yet made mention of his death. Goldberg's agent and a representative for the publisher of his autobiography, "Sit, Ubu, Sit: How I Went from Brooklyn to Hollywood with the Same Woman, the Same Dog, and a Lot Less Hair," have not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.
In addition to his television work, Goldberg worked on films such as "Must Love Dogs" and "Bye Bye Love."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A Missouri woman and her daughter confessed to fatally poisoning two relatives with antifreeze and attempting to kill a third over a 14-month period, according to court documents.
Diane Staudte, 51, of Springfield, was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action. Her daughter, Rachel Staudte, 22, was charged with the same counts Saturday.
Both women are jailed without bond. A spokeswoman for the Greene County prosecutor's office didn't immediately return an email Saturday from The Associated Press. It wasn't clear if the women had attorneys.
Diane Staudte initially told law enforcement that her husband, Mark Staudte, 61, hadn't been feeling well and suffered from seizures before his April 2012 death, the probable cause statement said. And she said her son, Shawn Staudte, 26, had been sick with flu-like symptoms before his death in September.
The medical examiner in Greene County at first ruled that the husband died of natural causes and the son as a result of prior medical issues. But an anonymous tip led authorities to re-examine the deaths earlier this month following the hospitalization of Diane Staudte's daughter, 24-year-old Sarah Staudte, the statement said.
A detective wrote that a nurse told him that although Sarah Staudte's condition was potentially fatal, Diane Staudte had visited only a couple times and not stayed long. The nurse described Diane Staudte's actions as "inappropriate," saying she joked and laughed with hospital personnel. The nurse also told the detective that Diane Staudte told her that she planned to go on an upcoming vacation to Florida regardless of her daughter's status.
A doctor told the detective that Sarah Staudte's condition was "very suspicious" and said he suspected the young woman had been poisoned.
Diane Staudte admitted under questioning to poisoning her family by putting antifreeze in their soda and Gatorade over several days, the statement said.
She told the detective that she killed her husband because she "hated him" and her son because he was "worse than a pest." She said she wanted to kill her daughter, Sarah, because the young woman "would not get a job and had student loans that had to be paid," the probable cause statement said.
The Springfield News-Leader, citing the probable cause statement in Rachel Staudte's case, said Diane Staudte originally told police she was the only one involved. But the statement said that when Rachel Staudte was confronted with evidence, she admitted to taking part in the deaths and assault.
During a subsequent interview, Diane Staudte then admitted that she and Rachel Staudte had planned, researched and committed the crimes together, the statement said.

For everyone else not used to looking at code, all this may sound a little intimidating, and we recommend using G2Reader?as our Editors' Choice for RSS jean- feed readers and in particular, a replacement to Google Reader. But using Tiny Tiny RSS to build your own feed reader is still possible with a little patience.
Tiny Tiny RSS is a Web application, so you need a Web server that supports PHP and either a MySQL or PostgreSQL database. Your desktop won't do. If you happen to have a Linux server lying around, you are set. Or you can use a Web host which supports PHP and lets you install a database, such as Dreamhost or even Amazon Web Services. You will also need a domain name so that you can type www.thisismysite.com?in your Web browser to load your very own Tiny Tiny RSS. If you already have a domain name, create a subdomain, such as myrss.thisismysite.com, and you are good to go.

Before you can get started, you need to have PHP installed on your Web server and create the database. If you need help, you need to ask your Web host or Google because Tiny Tiny RSS assumes you know how to set up and manage a server. Once you are ready, you can grab the install archive (tarball, a .tar.gz file) from the Tiny Tiny RSS Wiki, which contains all the files you need to set up the application and the database schema. The wiki actually has a decent set of instructions for an open-source project, so you should be able to get up and running although some Googling may be required.
If you've set everything up correctly, at this point, you can point your browser to your domain and log in to your very own Tiny RSS instance. Adding new feeds is easy. Just click the Actions menu at the top right corner of the screen and select Subscribe to Feed. To remove a feed, select it on the sidebar and click on Unsubscribe in the Actions menu.
You need to go into Preferences from the Actions menu to?import the list of RSS links from Google Reader. Under the "Feed" tab on the Preferences page, there is a section marked "OPML." This is where you list the subscriptions.xml file that you exported using Google Takeout. Click on "Import my OPML," and don't worry about the fact that your file has a .xml file extension and not .opml. It will work fine.?
If you have a lot of subscriptions, though, this is gonna take a while. I had only 81 and I got bored waiting.
Slow is a recurrent theme in Tiny Tiny RSS. It took about 20 to 30 seconds to move between the main page and Preferences, and about 10 to 15 seconds whenever I clicked on something on the page, such as a tab or moving to a new folder. Part of it is because, by default, Tiny Tiny RSS updates and grabs new items when you actually click on the feed instead of doing it beforehand. But the application itself has some performance issues.
While I don't have hardware or networking equipment on par with Amazon's or Google's, mine probably? makes for a better setup than what most home users have (let's just say: a virtual machine with four CPUs at 1 GHz each and 4 GB of memory, running on a host with 32 virtual cores on a business-grade network) and it's quite capable of handling multiple Web applications. Tiny Tiny RSS is the first application to ever give me performance issues.
Even if the import returns errors, the odds are everything completed successfully. You should see all the subscriptions in the left sidebar, organized in the same way as Google Reader, folders and all. You can select the feed and click the Actions menu to see what you can do, such as edit, rename, color-code, or re-categorize. However, Tiny Tiny RSS won't automatically update the feeds. You can turn on Simple Update Mode in the configuration file to update the feeds while you are logged in, or set up an update process on the server to run the updates even when you are not on the site.?
There are some nice features, though, such as getting a daily digest of your subscriptions and all your unread stories emailed to you, scoring each feed so that "interesting" articles always float to the top of the list, or adding a note associated with the item. Since you control the code, you can use CSS to tweak the site layout and design and create users to let other people use the platform for their own RSS needs. Once installed, you can use any computer with a Web browser to access Tiny Tiny RSS. There is an Android app, but not one for iOS yet.
The current Editors' Choice G2Reader remains the only RSS feeder we've seen that can correctly import Google Alerts. If you miss the social sharing capabilities that were in the original Google Reader, you should check out The Old Reader
If you use RSS to just catch up on articles and webcomics in the morning, or spaced out during the day, the speed issues and the lack of automatic updates may not be an issue for you. But if you are using it to stay on top of news as they develop, Tiny Tiny RSS may not be the best choice. If the DIY aspects don't scare you off and you really want to replace Google Reader with a platform you control (and goes away only if you want it to), then you may want to consider looking at Commafeed, another open source platform with better performance.
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A look at key moments this past week in the wrongful death trial in Los Angeles between Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and concert giant AEG Live LLC, and what is expected at court in the week ahead:
THE CASE
Jackson's mother wants a jury to determine that the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts didn't properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter by a criminal jury for Jackson's June 2009 death. AEG's attorney says the case is about personal choice, namely Jackson's decision to have Murray serve as his doctor and give him doses of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Millions, possibly billions, of dollars are at stake.
WHAT HAPPENED THIS PAST WEEK
? Jackson's personal chef Kai Chase told jurors about Jackson's relationship with his children as well as her impressions that the singer appeared weaker in the final weeks of his life. She recounted numerous tender moments, including a party Jackson threw for his daughter Paris on her 11th birthday, complete with a private circus.
? Charles Czeisler, an expert sleep researcher from Harvard University, told jurors that Jackson was totally sleep-deprived by the time of his death because the singer's use of propofol was not giving him actual sleep but was akin to being in a drug-induced coma.
WHAT THE JURY SAW
? Jurors got their first glimpse of Jackson's oldest children, Prince and Paris, testifying. An AEG lawyer played short clips of the pair to challenge testimony offered by Chase. The two-minute clip of Paris Jackson's testimony showed her alternately looking down and at an AEG Live attorney as she described her father's rocky relationship with her former nanny.
? The jury was shown several images related to how Jackson raised his children, including a handwritten note that Paris wrote Chase thanking her for several gifts she bought for the family while at Disneyland.
QUOTABLE MOMENTS
? "It was the most beautiful expression of love I've ever seen," Chase said about a Cirque du Soleil-style circus that Jackson hired for Paris' 11th birthday.
? "The meticulous detailing of his deterioration here was both profound and sad," Czeisler said of emails documenting Jackson's missed rehearsals and inability to perform songs and dance moves without tour worker being afraid he would hurt himself.
WHAT'S NEXT
? Jurors will hear from an expert in medical conflict of interest cases and may also hear testimony from Tim Leiweke, the former CEO of AEG Live's parent company, the Anshutz Entertainment Group. Leiweke's testimony may be shown to jurors from his videotaped deposition.
iPhone and iPad battery life is a precious commodity we just can't seem to get enough of. All of our social networks, email accounts, texts, and other apps want to send us notifications, which in turn, consumes more battery life. Sometimes tweaking settings in Notification Center can actually save quite a bit of battery life.
Here's what we recommend trying:
Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
Tap on Notifications.
FInd an app that frequently sends you notifications and tap on its name.
Scroll down towards the bottom and you'll see an option for View in Lock Screen.
Turn this option to Off for any apps that aren't important to be displayed on your Lock Screen.
By doing this, you'll still receive push notifications and you'll hear the tones, your screen just will not light up and they won't filter into your actual Lock Screen area. Upon unlocking your iPhone or iPad, checking Notification Center will still show them, they just won't appear in the Lock Screen portion. Basically, your screen doesn't light up every time you receive a notification from these apps any longer when the View on Lock Screen option is turned off. Less screen use equals better battery life. By doing this myself, I gained about an extra 15 to 25% battery life per day.
I've found this to be useful on apps I still want to know I'm receiving notifications for but don't necessarily need them on my Lock Screen such as Twitter and Facebook. I've also only get email notifications set up for VIP when it comes to the Lock Screen.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? FIFA says it is not considering canceling the Confederations Cup soccer tournament in Brazil as violent protests spread across the country.
An estimated 1 million protesters took to the streets in more than 80 cities on Thursday night.
Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets in Rio de Janeiro, where more than 300,000 people protested in the city hosting key Confederations Cup games.
But world soccer's governing body says in a statement to The Associated Press that neither "FIFA nor the LOC (local organizing committee) have ever discussed any such possibility" of canceling the eight-team tournament.
AT&T today announced that its Pantech Flex is receiving an over-the-air update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. That means you'll be able to get things like Google Now, the latest Google Voice Search and better accessibility features, too, with options for external Braille input and output, and Bluetooth and gestures for the visually impaired.
Plus you get those fancy Jelly Bean notifications that the kids are all talking about. AT&T says those with the Flex should receive a text message alerting them to the update.
