Mary Sues: A Curiosity

Earlier I began to think of the Mary Sue Litmus Test and began to wonder to myself are Mary Sues in their self inherently wrong or can a character whom is Mary Sue be played so well that they lose what people hate? Like the Mary Sue Litmus Test characterizes many things as Mary Sueish behavior, but is a Mary Sue not how they are shown, but more so how they are played. I ask because people take this test sometimes as gospel and even try to avoid these traits, but that in my opinion can sabotage a character, since these tropes or cliches became popular because they worked. Essentially I am asking could you not have what seems to be a Mary Sue character by her profile, but play them in such a way, the traits which that test claims is Mary Sue or Gary Sue traits enhance your character, rather than make your character whom they are?

We help the multi-nationals
when they cry out protect us.
The locals scream and shout a bit,
but we don?t let that affect us.
We?re here to lend a helping hand
in case they don?t elect us.
How dare they buy our products
yet still they don?t respect us.
