Financially Sound Ways to Protect the Home and Family | Millionaire ...

You have enough to worry about in this work-a-day world including your family and your finances without also having to add home security to the list. Unfortunately, the economy being what it is, you can never be too careful when it comes to the safety and security of your home. And while some people might like to tell you that securing the safety of your family and home can be expensive ? there are financially sound ways of accomplishing this.

Below are a few suggestions:

1. Invest in a home security system. You?re probably thinking that this is one of the most expensive suggestions one could give, but it all depends on where you shop and who you buy it from. Sites like securitychoice.com feature top-rated systems and sophisticated monitoring technology with monthly plans many modest-income families are able to live with.

2. Be wary of your trash and don?t be a show off. Always make sure that all of the trash you are throwing out is in tied trash bags or in trashcans. That means if you are throwing out the box your television came in, you should break it down and fit it into a trashcan instead of leaving it at the end of the driveway. You should also draw the curtains in your home at night to prevent would-be intruders from window shopping.

3. Coordinate with the neighbors on a safe zone. You don?t have to go spending tons of money on a fancy panic room if you have neighbors you can trust. Coordinate with the folks next-door and explain to them your concern and see if they will let you use their home as a safe zone. That way your family has somewhere to run to in the unfortunate event of a break-in.

4. Replace the locks. If you are moving into a home and you are not the first owner, then you should replace the locks. The same goes for if you have had the same locks for over five years. Door locks are fairly cheap, easy to install and can be found in most major hardware stores across the country.

5. Man?s best friend. A dog can make an incredible addition to any family and it is often the presence of a dog, alone, that is enough to deter anyone looking to let themselves in. Dogs are also very good at hearing what we, as humans, cannot. Just make sure that if you are looking to turn this dog into a guard dog, that you get special training and undergo the courses with your dog. A dog needs to be able to know which people coming into the home are guests and which are intruders.

I know that no one reading this wants to even imagine the thought of a home invasion, but it is something that must be addressed. There is no guarantee that your home will be broken into and no guarantee that it won?t. However, by following these cost-effective home security strategies, you are at least taking the necessary steps toward protecting your home and giving your family the peace of mind they deserve.
