Virginia school sues over new Georgia university name

Regent University, a private Virginia school founded in 1978 by televangelist Pat Robertson, it asking the U.S. District Court in Augusta to stop the University System of Georgia from using the name ?Georgia Regents University? for the consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University, reports Morris News Service.

Regent University president Dr. Carlos Campo had sent the Georgia Board of Regents a letter and called the board?s chairman seeking to work out the dispute in a friendly way before its recent 17-1 vote to adopt the name, the news service reported.

Campo said his school respects the Georgia Board of Regents, but believes the selection of the name Georgia Regents University is an infringement on its federally registered trademark. He said the Virginia school registers many of its students in online graduate courses and believes an Internet search of the name could cause confusion and suggest that the Augusta school is a branch of his school, Morris News Service said.
