5 candidates in race for Albuquerque mayor

Five candidates are in the race for the 2013 Albuquerque mayoral election.

Former City Council and Public Safety Officer Pete Dinelli wants to focus on public safety. If elected, Dinelli said he plans to immediately replace Albuquerque?s police and fire chiefs.

?When you look at public safety in general, it is in a complete meltdown,? Dinelli said.

Dinelli?s platform also focuses on saving the city money.

However, former Albuquerque Police Sgt. Paul Heh, another candidate on the October ballot, said he sick of the political bickering.

?We are facing monumental problems in Albuquerque,? said Heh.

Heh said he wants to tackle Albuquerque?s high drug rates and related crimes. Heh wants action, someone who will walk the walk, and he said that person is him.

?I intend to take ownership of the problems,? said Heh.

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry has announced he wants to be re-elected for a second term, citing low FBI crime rates, increased city fiscal responsibility and homelessness initiatives as key accomplishments he wants to continue.

?There?s a lot left to do,? said Berry. ?We?ve got the train on the track if you will, and now we need to get the train down the track.?
